He was actually our neighbour's dog but he was very much a member of our family. He used to come over for a day every now and then and he loved spending time with us, Monty and Woody. Monty was in love with Little Jack, he'd carry his lead for us on walks and urge him along. Monty grew up with Jack as his role model. Jack would tell him off for misbehaving.
A couple of years ago Jack was stolen out of his owner's car right in front of his house. He was gone for three days. My mum and I put posters up everywhere and really fought to put pressure on whoever had him. Finally we were contacted and a lady had been sold him for £100. She wanted no reward, but dropped him off and left in a hurry. Jack carried on after that as if nothing had happened, he was just extremely happy to see us.
Well in recent months, he started developing cataracts and going deaf. He never stopped being a cheeky little character though. He was born with a deformity but that never stopped him in life. His owner was Roy, who is around 84 years old and had only Jack for company. They spend their days watching tv, napping and strolling around the roads nearby. Jack was never on a lead, he never strayed away from Roy unless to come and see us. They shared a bed together each night, and there Jack passed away in Roy's arms.
Last time he came over I was doing something and I didn't spend a lot of time with him. I know everyone goes through these feelings and I'll probably feel better someday, but I feel SO guilty for not giving him more attention than I did.
I can't believe how empty this road feels now without hearing his very recognisable bark, and how deeply rooted my sadness is at his passing. He was definitely one to remember and he will definitely be greatly missed by a lot of people.
I hope, after suffering discomfort from a disfigured leg and his recent age-related ailments (including incontinence) that he can rest peacefully now
Though being a West Highland Terrier I imagine his idea of bliss would be chasing a great many feet among other things. When he was a bit younger he'd attack my mum's shoes for fun if she was being slow on a walk, to speed her up a bit.
You are greatly missed, gorgeous guy
