Zoey

Hello, I rescued a dog a week ago that I think is a mini schnauzer dachshund
Mix. I am told she is one and a half to two years old. I took her to my vet yesterday and she received a clean bill of health. She does have very runny eyes and I am hoping that by switching her to good-quality food the Eyes will clear up thinking that perhaps she has a food allergy. I feel bad for her as they run quite a bit. Is this a common problem for mini schnauzers? If so, is there anyway to clear it up or is it always allergy related?
Anyway, she is a little sweetheart. I also have a golden retriever who is right now agreeable to coexist but wants her space. My golden (sadie)is two and a half years old.

Does she look like a mini schnauzer dachshund mix to you?
Are runny eyes a common problem?

Thanks for any help you might be able to provide.
Janet

You say you have been to the Vet,was a fecal exam done ? Worms can be one of the causes of runny eyes...I am surprised that the Vet did not address the eye problem during the exam.

It is a good idea to upgrade her food and can do no harm.Be aware that slick advertising does not guarantee quality.
Check out Dogfood Anylasis.com' which rates foods from one to six stars and explains each rating .I personaly use a four star food and am quite pleased with it.

Welcome Janet! It's hard to say without seeing more pics and pics of her body. Congrats on the new addition!

Richard pretty much covered your question about the eyes. I too feed a higher feed, mine is a 6 star rating. Anything above 4 is much better. I always look for Meat being the first ingredients and I feed a no grain. Yes have the fecal done for worms, that is something you won't have to wait long to find out.

She is cutie for sure!

Hi Janet! Zoey is a cutie, and I am a long time Golden lover, so I'm sure once Sadie realizes this snippet is here to stay, they'll eventually become the best of friends. :D

My Cavalier, Oliver (the Blenheim) had much runnier eyes as a youngster than he does now. He just turned 9 this past week. The suggestion given to you by Richard is an excellent one, but some breeds/mixes tend to have runnier eyes than others. It's hard to tell in the photo you posted and I purposefully had a look. Because Oliver has one white eye, I really disliked the discolouration of his "weepy" eyes when he was a puppy. I looked into the causes for it, and discovered they are mostly internal. My other Cavalier, Henry, doesn't seem to have the same weepy eyes (he is 3 now) but then he has dark eyes, so perhaps I just couldn't tell as much.

As long as your Vet doesn't see an issue with it, and if you improve the quality of the food, I wouldn't worry about it too much. Just keep tissues on hand and enjoy your new little one.

The Daily Puppy is about all puppies, big and small, young and old, so we would love to see photos of Sadie as well....says she who adores Goldens!

Welcome to the Daily Puppy from Oliver & Henry, and their Mum, in London, Ontario. 8)
