Doggy Leg Warmers

Postby BraveTyphlosion on Fri Dec 07, 2012 12:00 am

So, it's very chilly here in Edmonton. Poor Teddy gets cold very easily but he NEEDS to go on his daily walks.

I have him wearing two coats at the same time to try and help him stay warm but his poor little legs get cold and even after lots of running around at the dog park with lots of puppies to play with he just gives up after a bit and I have to take him home so we both can warm up.

I was wondering if there was anything I could get him to help. Does anyone know of some kind of doggy leg warmers or leg wraps? Did they help your dog stay warm?

I haven't seen any but doesn't mean they don't exist. Leg warmers exist for horses so why not dogs? I will do a little research and see.

Well, they make boots for sled dogs..All of the competitors in the Iditerod races are required to carry several sets for each dog....But these ARE to protect their feet from sharp ice not so much as the cold...Sled dogs are a particularly hardy breed.

Gabi,if you want to play in the snow you need a big hairy dog :D

It's been quite bitter the past few weeks. Lots of wind and temps reaching below -26 (thats not the worst of it either, Alberta is notorious for -30 weather but that never stops us no matter how miserable we might be although on those days I admit I'll just tough it out and Teddy wont go out for a walk then)

I have gotten him boots for his feet although he had such a hard time walking in them and kept skidding and falling I decided it wasn't such a good idea. I'd rather him have a good grip and feel comfortable walking. That and like you said, it doesn't really keep them warm(He would still get cold wearing them) so much as it just protects them from sharp ice or salts.

If I can't find anything I'll pay a friend to make me something. I am horrible at crafts and sewing. Besides, this way I can make sure the material is good for winter and I'm not getting something that is just for fashion.

We had one puppy who suffered a broken toe when a littermate blind sided her as she was climbing the side of their pen. While she was in a cast we covered it with a red striped baby tube sock, she was the hit of the show circuit .

Perhaps you can find something useful where baby clothes are sold. The socks we used were for toddlers and I would guess that in your neck of the woods that you can find small leg warmers.

Thanks for the tips guys. Now all I need is the free time to go out and check things out. I've never heard of baby tube socks but that sounds right up my alley and if it keeps a baby warm hopefully it will keep teddy warm too and he will look oh so stylish xD That poor puppy, I hope she got better but at least she got lots of attention :3

Hopefuly this will help poor Teddy with his lack of fur. Poor little baldy

You could buy some children's tights and cut the pant section off. They would be longer than socks for your long legged dog.

I'll need something thicker than tights, unless they have like long john underwear tights...or maybe I'll use those. Hmmm :S

I might have some long socks that I could try cutting off the bottoms. I don't like to wear them, they're kind of itchy but warm.

Gabi,do you have any friends or relatives that like to knit ? They could make tubes from any type yarnn you like ( I would expect that you will want to leave the paws out for traction )....I am kind of fishing here....I have dogs who love to sleep in snowdrifts, they think -20f is a day at the beach

Hello. I have crocheted my small dog a set of leg warmers but more for fashion. I was thinking about this though and I thought I might look online for businesses that serve hunters and/or hunting dogs. I found a company, *Removed by Moderator* that sells front leg body suits, warm sleeves cover front legs. They also sell rear body suit piece that covers hind legs. Or, they sell leg tubes, used more for leg injury cover, but it appears that one can add fleece lining to them so as to make them more warm. Those sound ideal. Just an idea anyway.

Long time no see puppy lovers. It has been busy busy busy, but nice busy.

Mkay so I went into the baby clothing section and got Teddy a little thermal undershirt. It works great when paired with a doggy coat and he never complains one bit when I try to put it on him even with the long sleeves. He whines much less and seems waaaaaay happier. The fact that his back legs aren't covered doesn't seem to bother him.

WARNING, when trying this out make sure to cut some extra material off around the belly so your puppy doesn't accidentaly pee on the shirt.
