Waiting period before posting

Postby Nileska on Thu Jan 31, 2013 3:21 pm

Today we are besieged by trolls posting 15 irrelevant news articles. This is ridiculous and it gets worse each day.The admins.can only do so much and they need some help..

.It has been my opinion that we need a waiting period between joining the DP and full posting privileges ..One day would not be sufficient since the resourceful troll would join before midnight and begin posting a few minutes later..Two or three days would be better...The prospective member could read a few existing posts in the meanwhile.

I am betting that the kiddies have a short attention span and will go on to other things, thereby reducing the problem.

I joined a Farming Forum and had to wait a few days before posting. I had to answer questions while registering and then wait for moderator approval. It wasn't hard to do, I can see where it would help.

I spent over 15 minutes today deleting this junk....Grrrr......

There ya go,another site has solved the.same problem.I would guess that life is a bit easier for THIER moderators..PLEASE have mercy on ours.It would not kill a prospective member to also answer a few relevant questions as Kian has described..Approval by a moderator could be accomplished by one keystroke..

.You already use your power to ban anyone for cause at your own discretion. There is a gentleman in the UK who I used to enjoy trading " war stories " with, who is no longer with us due,I assume,to some sort of transgression.

Richard, since it is really just Kian and I now who moderate the site, unfortunately, I am not able to get on here earlier in the day. Kian bears the brunt of cleaning up anything from the previous night, although I often check in here as late as 2:00 a.m.

These spammers are auto-generated as they almost always post in threes and we do our very best to eradicate them as quickly as we can. There is an entire "reporting procedure" we must go through with each new spammer. I try, when possible to pick up the evening slack but sometimes Kian is here before I am and she catches them.

As far as the gentleman from the U.K. is concerned, and I'm quite sure I know to whom you are referring, he engaged in a series of conduct most unbecoming ANY gentleman! Despite being asked repeatedly to cease and desist, he did not and therefore he chose his own consequences. That was quite some time ago now, and he has chosen to cut all ties with everyone with whom he was "friends" on here. That seems to be a well established pattern for him on various websites.

I apologize for not having more time to give to the Daily Puppy on certain days, and I am extremely grateful to Kian for carrying the load. If and when Kian is on holiday, I do my level best to be on here more often if my schedule permits.

Dear Deb,I did not realize that you and Kian were the only ones left doing the moderator duties,,,An even more urgent reason for help with troll control...As Kian has found with the other site a short waiting period does no harm except to discourage the spur of the moment spammiester....I am all for makeing your job easier..I DO appreciate what you and Kian contribute to the quality of the DP....Upward and onward !

Thanks Richard! ♥

I have been advocating that for years, so it's rather safe to say it isn't likely to happen, although it would make moderating a whole lot easier.

Dear Deb...And what is Demand Media going to do when they can no longer find ANYONE to serve as moderators ? Are they going to hire paid mods to deal with the ever present trolls and spammers or will the site degenerate into chaos ?..For the good and welfare of the DP you,Kian and whoever else might join the fray will need more support than you are now recieveing if the DP is going to survive..., 8)

I know Richard, If I have time I don't mind. Somedays I just cannot get on in the morning, when Spring finally comes it will become harder. I just want the video spammers to go away!

It does work since I'm a early riser and Deb is a night owl, good team! Deb will get most of it as we will be on the road again soon.

Thanks Kian! I feel badly some days as I see that you have spent at least 30 minutes eradicating spam and then there is none, and I check and check, but sure enough, it's all there again the next morning.

We both do the best we can, and yes, next week, I may have to see about changing my schedule a bit.

Normally I can still check, however, traveling with two dogs will become my morning priority. I will still try to make sometime if I can. If not, we will just do the best we can and hope no one ever clicks on those links.

Kian, you will have your hands full. I can't imagine anyone being dumb enough to actually click on those links, but ya never know!

Enjoy your time away, and I'll make some use of my laptop. :D
