Any Night Owls

Postby Ella & Roxy's Mommy on Fri Feb 13, 2009 3:57 am

Well here I sit at work, its 0254 in Texas. Yes you read right, Im at work. Unfortunately I work the graveyard shift, and I cant stand it. So I catch up on the DP at night when everyone is asleep. So Im curious, what does everyone do for a living? I for one am a police dispatcher! Best job I have ever had, and man we get some weird things during the graveyard shift!

It's 1:15 right now, here in BC, Canada....
I'm a retired hardware store owner, disabled with XXXX problems...
I am always up late, because I don't sleep well, have pain, and the later I stay up, the less time I have to lay and not sleep.
I sleep in though. I usually can sleep between six and noon, fitfully, but that's OK....
Kiba is my dog. I mean that he is my dog in that he doesn't mind sleeping in either. He's quite happy to lounge in bed till noon if I feel I can't rise quite yet.

Any member of the police force has my respect. Thanks.

Hi, it's 7.50 pm in Aus, and I'm at my 2nd job at the slotcar track O.H owns. Tonight is club racing
so it's a late night for us, if we're home by midnight it's good. In the mornings I'm a house keeper at
a hotel, I start work at 8.30 am. I get Monday and Tuesday off from both jobs usually.

Hi Ella'sMommy, I worked night shift for many years in factorys. I've spun yarns ,made stockings, made bread crumbs
in a bakery, put plugs on electric leads. All of those jobs were night work, I had almost forgotten what sunshine was
when I stopped the shift work. You must be a special person to be able to do your job, I don't think I could do it.

Yikes, Ive been doing the night shift for about a month now and I can not stand it! My perfect shift was taken away from me because someone else with higher seniority wanted it  The first week or so I dont think I left my house during daylight hours at all! The first time I went out during the day I seriously felt like a "vampire" and thought I was going to burn up. hahaha Thank goodness Im getting off in an hour hopefully and can go home and sleep!!!!!! :D

I love the early morning but hate getting out of bed early so just stay up late.
Even now if we go out I hate going home before the sun comes up. :) Enjoy your sleep

I used to do "on call" in my job. I would work all day and then if it was quiet I would get to go to bed in the on call room and they would page me if something needed doing. Some people were lucky and would sleep all night if they were on call, others, usually me would hardly ever see the on call room. I would be really tired around 3 or 4am and then liven up again after that. I'm not sureI could do it these days. I'm not sure it's even legal to work that many hours in one go anymore.

Oh my goodness, that sounds horrible. I'm actually 'on call' tonight but the earliest I could get called to come in is at 1830 tonight. **crosses fingers** please not tonight!!!!

Fingers are crossed Ella's mommy.

When I did on calls I was younger and single and it didn't bother me. I only ever used to have a couple of hours sleep the following day if that. I definitely couldn't do it now. I used to stay up until 2 or 3am painting and then get up at 6.30am for work as well in those days. I must have been mad.

Boy I could be a night owl with no problem...........but then I don't want to get up for work in the morning! It is now 7:30 AM here in Indiana and I have been at work for 1/2 hour. I work in property accounting and like to come in early and leave early......beats the traffic and I feel like I have more time at home!! There are times when I get on the DP in the evening that I lose track of time and its midnight before I realize it. I only have 5 hours to sleep then.........and I require more than that!!

Hi Ella's Mom,
I worked as a police Dispatcher in college, many, many years ago! I loved it, I too have some funny stories to share about 911 calls. It's amazing what people call for. I was 24 then. Now I'm semi-retired. I have done vet tech and behavorist, worked for a cadiologist, Assitant Manager for a Hardware store-loved that, lets see if I can remember what else... EMT for a middle school. I love different jobs, it keeps me learning new things. Now I work 29 hours a week in a Hardware store. The people in the town are fun to visit with. It certainly is a small town hardware store! I also train dogs on the side when there is work, with the economy people don't want to pay. Mostly I have done it for free because of the dogs.
(I went to college for the vet tech/behaviourist)

Graves are hard, I couldn't do it now. Maybe now, Lokis mum and Caramel won't feel alone on here! They are both wonderful gals.

I know the nightshift is hard as my OH is a Respiratory Therapist who works in an ICU setting. Up until 2 years ago, he had worked 12 hour shifts of 2 weeks of days, 2 weeks of nights for 20 years! It's not easy working nights, so I'm glad the DP is worldwide and varied as you won't be alone Ella's Mom.

Kiba, like Oliver, adapts well to whatever the plans are! :)
