SALLY - In Loving Memory of a Silly Girl

Postby Oliver & Henry's Mum on Sun May 24, 2009 8:05 pm

I talk about Sally and Emma so much, and felt Sally deserved to be memorialized too. It was recently her birthday, on or about May 14, 1990. Emma was so lonely and needed a friend, so I found Sally through an ad. She had an overbite amongst other things, and was the silliest, goofiest, baby girl ever. Sally was always the baby. She adored Emma, who took 2 weeks to warm up to her, but once they did, they were the best of friends. When Sally was 6, she was diagnosed with cancer. It was a very invasive tumour that had wrapped itself around the muscles of her front, left leg. We had it removed and were told to expect it to return, at which time, it would be inoperable. She had a lump larger than a golf ball in what would be her armpit. Sally did remarkably well after the surgery and went on to live to be 13. She passed away on my father's birthday, June 11, 2003. We always called her Silly Sally because she never truly grew up and was always in a perpetual state of youth. Sally loved Ben and Elliot so much. I was with her when she died and took comfort knowing Emma was waiting for her. They used to swim together, hunt together, do everything together and more often than not, Emma had to put Sally in her place. She was very much like the little dog with the bulldog on the Warner Bros. cartoons...always bugging Emma. According to my older brother, Sally was not dumb and understood English. Every morning when I let Sally out, she would have to lick the back of my bare leg, and every morning I would try and avoid that lick. I miss it now. She snored, she barked when a doorbell rang on the tv, she licked the boys daily, and she terrified people who came to the house with her enthusiasm. She lived for Hallowe'en when all the little ones were at her level, again perfect for kisses. When Sally was so lonely after Emma died, I really wanted a Cavalier to keep her company, but it was not to be. Sally was cheeky, quite naughty and the best black dog ever!

Oh Deborah,
I have tears rolling as I type this...

Sally was a beauty and she sounds wonderful. You were so lucky to have her for all those extra years that weren't expected.
Your girls are together again, as it should be.

Linda, Kian and RJM...thank you for your comments. I still smile when I think of Sally scaring the daylights out of Elliot in his baby swing. He would be sleeping away (which wasn't often) and on the tv a doorbell would sound. Right beside that poor baby's head, she would bark and wake him. I am laughing as I type this. He would wake up, crying and I would sternly say Sally. She would wag her tail and walk over and lick his head. Sally loved her babies...Ben and Elliot, and she would have loved Oliver. Losing Sally was truly the end of an era. My father had passed away, my marriage was over, the boys were growing and she had walked such a long road with me. That goofy, sweet, silly girl never failed to make me smile but it was time for her to rest. Her work was done. :)

I have a huge lump in my throat after reading your tribute to Sally  She is so beautiful and was so very blessed to have you. I'm happy she lived 7 more years after her surgery from cancer, that is a miracle. Your comment to Linda, Kian and RJM made me laugh about Sally barking at the sound of a doorbell on tv and waking the baby...and then kissing him after hearing you say her name, that's funny :D I'm truly sorry for all the heartache you endured in that particular time, over the loss of your father, Sally and a divorce... when it rains it pours, doesn't it? I wish you much happiness and many happy, healthy years with Oliver... and more furr-babies, too, when they come along
