I went out to feed the girls (the horses) as usual. I heard some chirping. I normally hear chirping in the barn, there are a lot of nests, but this chirping was different. It was coming from the ground. A baby bird was sitting there, all alone. No other birds in sight. I tried to find it's nest, but I was unable to reach it. It was wedged in between a drain pipe somehow. So, I did the only thing I could. I tried to save it. Sadly, this baby didn't make it. I think the fall was what killed it. It was unable to hop around on it's own, so I know it wasn't supposed to be out of the nest yet.
Then, later that afternoon, I find another baby bird. This one was dead. It didn't even have it's baby feathers. I cleaned it up as quickly as I could.
Later later, I went back to the barn. Found another. This one was (THANK YOU!) able to hop, and was what would be called a fledgling. Meaning it was learning to fly, while it's parents were still caring for it out of the nest. I left it alone. As far as I know, it survived.
By the end of the day, I was so sick of those mother birds. I figured there was no use in worrying about it anymore though. I had done my best to help the one baby. The other two were out of my hands. I had never had a bird fall out of the nest at the barn before. So, I figured that it was just an odd day. Oh no...............
The next day I needed to get hay down. Topaz followed me to the barn. First thing I saw was a baby bird, dead on the ground. Next thing I saw? Topaz escaping. I chased her down, and managed to take it away from her. Boy, was she in trouble! I went back to the barn to get the hay. When I moved a hay bale, I saw something move. There was another baby bird. I picked it up, and moved to a basket to keep it safe so I could look for the nest. I moved another hale bale. What did I see? You guessed it. A baby bird. It was the same size as the other, so I put them together. I decided to make a "nest" for them, because I read that sometimes the mom will come back and care for them. I left them in their "nest", hoping for the best. I came back later to find not two baby birds, but FOUR.
The two had managed to squirm out of the nest. One had fallen down into the isle way. The other was in the loft still- along with a new baby. The fourth was bigger than the others. It could hop, but not fly. It still needed to be in the nest. I gathered up all four of them, made a bigger and better nest. Then fed them. I left them there, once again hoping the mom would find them and care for them. No such luck. They all made it through the night. I fed them. The next day, I continued to feed them. The one that fell wasn't doing very well. It sadly died the next night. So, now I'm mother to 3 baby birds. No real mommy in sight. I feed them wet dog food. They are doing wonderful. I would have happily turned them over the a wild life ranger, but currently, there is not one in our district.
I am so hoping that those mother birds change their ways and keep their remaining babies IN the nest! I'm glad I'm able to help these 3, but I also hope I'm helping. Now my question is, do I have to push them out of the nest?
Also, please understand, I did research how to care for baby birds. I know that dog food is okay. I'm not just feeding them whatever, or doing whatever with them. I am also using a towel to move them, and tweezers to feed them. I'm trying my best to help.
But, after sharing my experience here, I was wondering- has anyone else saved a baby bird before? I'm wondering exactly what to do as they get bigger. Do I have to help them fly? Or will they on their own?
