Our rott is a very aggressive chewer. Luckily however, he only chews on his toys. The problem we run in to is because he is such a chewer he goes through toys like no other. The only thing that seems to last more than 2 days are big retriever rolls or bones. I have gotten him heavy duty rubber toys and toys that are like tires and he will sit and chew for 15-30 mins and have pieces missing in which then he will swallow and throw back up. Does anyone know of any good, strong, durable toys that would be good for him so I don't have to keep buying bones all the time and wasting my money on toys they destroy in a matter of minutes? Thanks for your help.

Kongs are fairly strong.

I use plastic 2 litre drinks bottles, sometimes filled with water and frozen. They have great fun with those but you have to watch them and remove if they start to chew bits off.

yeah they definetly liked regular water bottles so many I will have to find the 2 liters since they are bigger now. I will time him and see how long it takes and I'll let you know.

Fill it with water and freeze it. It might last longer.

Yes, the Kongs are nearly indestructible. They make special ones that are even harder rubber. They are the black ones.

rotti's have exceptional bite strength. even the kong extreme wont hold up sometimes. they bite harder than pit bulls per square inch.

Absolutely not!

Rottweilers were initially used as herding dogs in Germany (so says Wikipedia...I know it's not reputable). Anyway, more recently (recently as in WW1 and 2) their role has switched to one of "guard dog". Breeders would select bitches and dogs most likely to exhibit aggressive behaviours towards strangers, resulting in a "better gaurd dog".

These behaviours are genetically ingrained and have nothing to do with their brain size. That being said, behaviours are a result of both genotype and phenotype (environmental influences), so not all rottweilers will be aggressive and snap at people. And of course, there are rottweilers that exist that were never bred to be a guard dog.

agreed. Our rottweiler is probably one of the biggest babies you will ever meet. He is a lover as well, but yet he is a great guard dog. He will sit on our love seat and look out the window and if he sees someone approaching he will let us know. Now if that person is a friend or family member he greets them with lots of kisses. If someone were to break in the story will be different. He is a really great dog.

My Ruby is a rottweiler mix, with a Golden Retriever disposition She loves everyone!
She doesn't have an agressive bone in her body...well, except when it comes to chipmunks

RJM, I'm sure Ruby and Cheyenne must be related! They're both such sweethearts! (Cheyenne is RottXGSD). My sister and my niece both had rotts who were sweet, loving dogs but would protect their own. When looking up information about rotts, since before I had Cheyenne I was debating about getting a pure rott - luckily I chose Cheyenne!, the info I found was a rott's bite could be as high as 1800 psi. The range was around 1500-1800 psi. I too think the black kongs are about the sturdiest toys. Filled with peanut butter and frozen could keep even a rott entertained for a long time. Cheyenne loves her peanut butter kong.

Yes we have found that putting peanut butter in the kongs are wonders even though I think it lasts for 3 minutes before it is cleaned!

They are little buggers arnt they. Lucky for you yours chews on toys, even if he goes through them so fast. Ours ate rocks, anything leather (boots, belts, gloves and even that chunk of leather on the back of your jeans) and anything else that wasnt his. One sugestion not a chew toy but might keep him busy enough so he dosnt miss chewing is a food ball. Bought mine at Petsmart, looks like a 6''x6'' die but hard plastic. You can put dogfood/small treats in it and they roll it and the food comes out at a rate you set by the dial. Keeps them busy for awhile if nothing else!

I'm seconding everything above. My Rottie is the biggest sweetpea ever. He is 130 pounds of the purest love I have met in a dog. He can chew through anything, but the two greatest things that have helped us get through the years are the Buster food cube set to difficult and lately, having a little brother that keeps him distracted all day. He's too tired to chew as much now.
