Shiloh Shepherds

Postby ncisfan86 on Fri May 29, 2009 12:25 pm

Okay we met a Shiloh Shepherd yesterday and my husband fell absolutely in love with it. He was a very friendly dog yet very sturdy. Its like my husband met his dream dog. His name was Samson and his owner told us a little about the breed.

And I feel that its only a matter of time before my husband comes home with a Shiloh Shepherd so (So much for my american pit bull terrier)

anyways can you give me some info from either personal experience or general knoweledge on the breed.

How big do they get?

How are they with Children?

How much exercise they require?

What kind of activities are they good at (since we do dog activities)

And do they make a good family dog or are they attached to a single member?

and how are they with other dogs?

Thanks

Oh and how to go about finding a good breeder. I've done rescue lately (my last dog was a rescue and sadly my other dog came from a byb...I didn't know what a Back yard breeder was back then but I do now)

When we were looking for a collie breeder, I contacted the AKC and they gave me contact info for several reliable breeders.

Since Shiloh's are not recognized by the AKC that would not be a good resource for finding a breeder. Take a look at the breed standard and the Shiloh Learning Center for info about their temperment.

Personally I feel they get along great with everyone, especially children. We have a cat and they are like best buds. And we also attend several doggie events and all the Shiloh's seem to get along very well.

We are very active outdoors so selected a Shiloh who was active as well and he fits our lifestyle to a T. A great breeder can do that for you to, you just need to be very clear and honest about what you are looking for a in a dog.

I so know whay your husband was hooked :)

Hi. I'm glad to see that Shiloh shepherds are finally getting some recognition. There is a club that was started by Tina Barber who has gotten the breeding and recognition these wonderful dogs deserve. They are not recognized by the AKC but she has her own club, Shiloh Shepherd Dog Club of America which begot the International Shiloh Shepherd Registry. The official web site shilohshepards.org will answer all your questions about Shiloh Shepherds. To me it looks like they took all the GSD variants that the AKC will not recognize, e.g. Black GSDs, and started a breeding registry which is how new breeds get recognized.
I was 8 when my family got our first GSD. She was a long-haired shepherd who's sire was a German Grand Champion. She was one of the gentlest dogs I ever met. We use to have a joke that if a burglar ever broke in she would probably take him/her by the hand and show him/her where everything is. I didn't realize that these gentle dogs would someday become their own breed until I got a long-haired GSD from a back-yard breeder. (Not recommended unless the pups are properly socialized. Mine wasn't.) Anyway, he was the sweetest, goofiest guy. I joined the GSD club here in Spokane, WA, and that how I found out about Shiloh Shepherds. I hope you and your husband will take one of these wonderful pups into your home. You'll be rewarded with lots of love and fun times. Just make sure you brush them, a lot, they have a thick under fur. But that's just more to cuddle with.

Good luck!
