I find teaching my dogs to dig in mole hills fun! They dig naturally, and Jacks love it! Mine eat the dirt, which can't be good. They've never had any problems with choking on it, so I'll let 'em get on with their games until one gets hurt, then the game is over for ever!

I absolutely LOVE JRTs!! I do have a question though. 4 years ago I took home a baby JRT, her name is Jada. She went everywhere with me. Work, friends house, mall. Wherever. I ended up meeting my husband and moved far away from home for 6 months. My parents took care of Jada. My mom became so attached, she wanted to keep Jada. I hesitated for a while. But I gave in. Jada had been about 2 years old. So, I decided to go and get myself another little JRT. Of curse, a baby. Well, they were fine growing up together until just one night.

Jada was under the covers sleeping against my belly and Mia, age 1 at this point, did NOT like that. Mia was literally jumping all over Jada making her angry through the covers. (Jada would visit quite often)

Now, they fight. And when I say fight, they make each other bleed horribly. It is horrible, I can't even take Mia over to my parents house or have Jada over. I still love every ounce of Jada.]

My parents had said when they had Mia at their house onenight while I was out, Jada became very angry when Mia was walking on their bed. Now they just hate each other. It breaks my heart

What can I do and why are they doing this? Am I able to fix this problem?

I am also a Jack Momma, lover and breeder, I have never had an issue with my Jacks digging but I was told in the past that if you bury chicken wire in their holes, they will learn pretty quickly to stay away.

Jack Russell Terriers were "created" to run with a pack of Foxhounds and go down the hole after a fox. Because of this, they must be fearless fighters.

They need to dig and they need to have the stamina to run with a pack of Hounds. JRT's must also have the courage of a Lion to fight that fox, in a hole. They are instinct driven, as they should be. A Jack will run until it drops, and fight to the death, whether it be a raccoon, groundhog, or fox.

Many people are fooled by their adorable appearance and underestimate their needs. They also make good ratters, and will happily rid their home of any rodents or vermin. Unlike a cat, they will not always bring their prize to you, but will dispense with it entirely.

This is why they were created! They were not a recognized breed in North America until fairly recently. Being involved with JRT's (from England) since the early 70's, it is disheartening to me to see people now trying to make them into apartment dwellers or feisty lapdogs. To do that is to kill the very spirit of a Jack Russell. If one is not prepared to allow them to flourish in the manner for which they were intended, they should not own a Jack Russell, in my opinion.

They make excellent companions as they are quite portable, and get along well with humans. It is my sincere hope that people who acquire a Jack Russell, such as the OP, provide them with an environment full of stimulation that allows their nature to shine.

The intention of my previous post was to highlight the true nature of the Jack Russell, in its purest form. They are adorable, loving, wonderful companions who thrive and flourish when allowed to be a true Jack Russell Terrier.

Thank you. I think she is very content. Yes, people should know what they are getting into when it comes to this breed. Yes, they are cute when they are puppies, but all puppies are cute. Sorry i didn't mean that someone here said, that JRT's don't sleep. A figure of speech; speak sort of.

Hello all, first time dog owner & owner of 2 JRT's. We're constantly stopped because of the pups, and those in the know always tell us we have ourselves some active pups and good luck. Currently we do live in an apartment w/ 2 children, but don't find the space at all constraining. The pups are crate trained and are given a chance to run around at 1of 3 nearby parks. So for you apartment owners that want/love JRT's it is more than possible if you take the time during the day to let them run around.

Currently one of our pups has a rare auto-immune disease called "puppy strangles" and we also suspect that the same pup (Marley) is deaf. Being def I don't find too bad, he doesn't bark at every sound and th training is no different with hand signals. Marley smells the treats and is attentive. The "puppy strangles" is heart breaking though, Marley showed signs of being the dominant dog even being the runt of the litter and the smallest of the 2, but his size remains small & the medicine leaves him in a weak state most of the day. Noah, the other JRT, doesn't quite understand this & constantly wants to play. My concern at the moment is the "puppy strangles" & the medicine are making him anti-social, mostly towards other dogs. Any help with this? We do a social behavior class every Thursday, no luck so far, 4 weeks in.

I expect if he is feeling weak he probably feels very vulnerable. Maybe he would feel more confident with other dogs if you leave it until he is feeling better. I don't know, it's just a thought.

I agree with Deerie me,

Just like us if we are feeling weak and sick do we want to be bug by someone? No. But once he is feeling better than he will be more like himself. Sorry to hear that your little one has that, and hope he gets better.
