Pomeranian Health Issues

Postby becafw on Thu Jun 24, 2010 4:44 pm

Hi! My name is Beca and I adopted an eight yr old Pomeranian mix, Autumn, from a rescue a couple months ago. I wondered if anyone could give me advice about any dental issues they might have had with their Pommie. The rescue and our dog's foster parents let us know that Autumn has had dental issues in the past and will probably have more in the future. Right now, my chief health concern for her is that she's losing a lot of protein in her urine. Our vet thinks it be from dental disease, so I am taking her to the vet to get cleaned and hope that stops her protein loss. Any thoughts on this?

Welcome to the Daily Puppy Beca and Autumn.

Unfortunately I do not have any advice to give you, but I would like to say best of luck to you and please keep us posted. I'm sure your journey with Autumn could be helpful to others facing similar challenges.

Hopefully some of our other members can offer some insight.

Keep us posted!

I have a Pom, he's only 1 and so far no teeth problems. However, Pom's are known to have bad teeth.

I haven't heard of dental disease causing protein in the kidneys? Will a cleaning solve the dental disease?

We have another member who has Pom's. She had one that had kidney problems along with stones. If I remember right, her vet thought the stones were related to the food prescribed for the kidney problems.

My experience has been that the cause of protein in the urine is difficult to solve. I also have a mix, I think chow/border collie named Charlie that has kidney and urine issues. He has always had diluted urine and this spring it was showing elevated levels of protein as well. The vet said it could be anything from diet to kidney disease. We did a urine protein creatinine ratio, that ruled out Kidney disease and then were doing blood tests which kept coming back borderline low to normal. Charlie has always acted completely fine, has always had diluted urine, and then my vet became ill with cancer, so we still haven't figured out what is going on, if anything.

I wish you luck and hope you find out what is going on with Autumn. Please let us know how things progress!!

Hi, Thanks for responding to my post!! The vet also told us it was hard to find out the cause of the issue, but said it was a good thing that Autumn is behaving normally so they don't think it's a kidney issue. We are taking her to the vet in a week for her teeth cleaning.

Hi Everyone!

Here is an update on Autumn's health. Autumn had her dental cleaning yesterday! We got a lot of good news. Her bloodwork showed that everything is good, including her kidneys and liver. Her dental cleaning also went well...NO EXTRACTIONS!!! Our vet said she doesn't have any dental or gum disease. We are going to take Autumn back to the vet in a month for another urinalysis to see if she is still losing protein through her urine. Hopefully, this teeth cleaning did the trick and everything will be great.

I just want to thank everyone for their support and good wishes!
