Adventures in Landscaping

Postby snifferspommom on Fri Jun 25, 2010 9:49 am

Just some shots of what we are doing around the house... These are all in my photobucket album too. For some reason, the shots got cut off on the right side when sharing via the image code :? It really is more curvy than it looks.

Thanks ladies! There's plenty of grass still left for the OH to mow!!

That little helper was a big stinker before we put that fabric down, grr!!

We're supposed to get dumped on this weekend and we'll be out of town. Hope that soil doesn't wash away...Might have a chance to put edging around my future veggie garden (where the trellis is) before we leave today.

Alina, The photo of what you started with is what we have on the west side of our house. Bushes and red lava rock...yuck! We did it 18 years ago and it's gotten quite straggly, we don't use that side of the yard very often, so it's been neglected.
I really like the more natural landscaping look, with native plants, like you're doing. I've been thinking of pulling out all the old stuff and redoing it.
You've inspired me! But I don't think the HO is going to be very happy! :P

Definitely rock but mulch around the tree in the front for my bulb/annuals.
Trying to go as native as I can but of course will have ornamentals thrown in there.

Fantastic!!!

Your grass is so green and lush. That is a huge border you have to plant. You could get some amazing huge shrubs to go in there and some really tall perenials to go at the back. Yay, I can't wait to see it when it's finished. I could returf my entire lawn with what you've removed and boy does it need it.

Yeah they filled up a dump truck with sod! Wonder if they reuse it?

I think this year there will be more rock than plant but that's ok.

I can see, now, what you meant about "no fences allowed". It makes for a tidy neighbourhood, but I would resent the lack of privacy. I love the curvy beds. I never "do" symmetrical.

Can you put a very close to the ground barrier, just to delineate your yard, without violating your bylaws? Even pegs and a string a few inches off the ground? I can see why your neighbour children think it's OK to just wander onto your lot, without there being anything to say, "your yard ends here, this is MINE". Having something there would let you teach Sniffers the same, too. Not secure enough to leave him out there alone, of course, but maybe enough that you could play fetch off-leash once in a while. I've never taught boundaries that way, but I've read about it being done. Kind of like a mental e-fence! :)

Alina, I have lawn envy! We aren't allowed to use any weed killers in London anymore and slowly everyone's lawns are turning to clover and dandelions. I would have loved to have your left over sod.

Your gardens are going to be beautiful. You have a lovely home. Sniffers looks so wee standing out there. He is too cute! I bet he is a big help for a little fellow.

Alina that is going to look so good! It looks like a great variety of plants you have already to go in the beds. I'll look forward to seeing pictures as they get planted.

It's going to look great! I love your little helper, too cute. I missed planting this year, I enjoy gardening and your house is going to be the envy of the neighbours. I too would love your leftover sod, always room for more grass. Your weed barrier looks really nice, should keep those pesky weeds out of there.

Hi Alina,
wow you got lots of work completed since i went on holiday,...and you had a wee helper, :) ...great selection of shrubs, and flowers,..and not too badly bothered by the long potting period,....yes love the fact you did not succumb to square shapes around the house,..but with your dad's gardening in mind,...it was sort of sure to be shaped and curved!,..nice going,...keep us up to date,...oh and really looking forward to seeing growth and blooms.
