Profile: Lyra Bertels Core 3 Robert Service and Edgar Allan Poe This is a comparison of two poets from the 1800's. Edgar Allan Poe was born on January 19, 1809. Poe was born in Boston with a brother and a sister. When he was two his mom died of tuberculosis, and his dad left. Poe was taken in by the Allan family, Frances and John Allan. He went to many schools, and Poe was a well educated boy. Robert Service was born January 16, 1874, in Preston, England. He was the oldest of ten brothers and sisters. When he was four his family moved to Scotland. Poe was educated, while Service dropped out of school in 1888.Service got a job as an apprentice at a bank in Scotland. Seven years later he became a fully qualified bank clerk. He was making 70 pounds a year. Poe and his new family moved to England and returned when he was eleven John Allan bought Moldavia, a huge brick mansion, when Poe was fifteen. Robert Service was doing fine with money, and Poe was in debt. When Poe was 16 he was sent away to college at the University of Virginia. He was sent away because Poe didn't respect his father John Allan. John always had affairs, which Poe didn't believe in. John Allan never sent Poe money in college, so he tried to gamble to make money for his bills and food. But he ended up two thousand dollars in debt. To avoid debtors prison, he joined the army as Edgar Perry. When Poe was twenty his mom, Frances Allan, died in Richmond. He tried to make it to her funeral, but didn't get there in time. Robert resigned from the bank when he was 22, thinking to be a rancher, that dream didn't work out. Service did many manual labor jobs and moved a lot for a few years, until he decided to go back to being a bank clerk. He got a job in Vancouver at the Bank of Commerce. In 1905, Service transferred to the Yukon bank branch at Whitehorse. Service really enjoyed the Yukon. Wen Poe was 20 he was released from the Army , and entered Westpoint Academy. Two years later, Poe wanted to get out of Westpoint and refused to attend classes. He was court-martialed on February, and his case was dismissed, after a month, in March. Poe's father, John, died in 1834, and completely left Poe out of his will. When Poe was 27 he married Virginia, who was thirteen years old. They were happy together, and they moved to New York, then to Philadelphia. At the Yukon he decided to write poems, and get a private printing of them in 1907, but he was offered to publish them. By November 1909 he had $10,000 in his account with $5,000 coming in each year, from his books. So he left the bank to work on his books and poems. When he was 35 he rented a log cabin and worked on his first novel, The Trail of Nintey- Eight. Poe became the Editor of Graham's Magazine in 1841, he was 32 years old. Poe's story "Murders in the Rue Morgue" was featured in the magazine. That was the first detective story from the 1800's. Poe's fame grew as his poems and stories were published in magazines and newspapers. When Service was 36 he decided to walk to New Orleans, but took a train when he reached Philadelphia. Once in New Orleans he missed the Yukon and moved back, getting back to his old life writing books. Service married Germaine Bourgoin in 1913. On January 28, 1917 Germaine gave birth to twins, Doris and Iris. The family traveled to the Rivera when Robert was 44. Poe and Virginia moved to New York in 1844. In 1845 poe's most famous poem was published. "The Raven" only sold for about $15 though. It was republished by other people too, so basically his work was stolen from him a few times. When Poe was 42 his wife died of tuberculosis. Robert Service received a check for $5,000, for filming right of his poem, The Shooting of Sam McGrew. The family traveled to New York and Hollywood, then his family returned to Paris in 1922. Then the family moved south to the Rivera. Well Robert and his family moved a lot, between 1929 and 1939. Robert's mom died in Vancouver when she was 84. Robert was 65. The Services traveled to Vancouver, the Robert was missing the Yukon again, so he left to the Yukon and came back a few days later. In 1940 he and his family moved to Hollywood, where they settled down for 5 years. Poe had a drinking problem which took away many opportunities for him, including marrying again, but he must have stopped drinking because in 1849 he joined the Sons of Temperance, and that society required that you couldn't have alcoholic problems. Poe moved to Baltimore in September, 1849. Poe was 40. Robert Service made an autobiography called Harper of Heaven and it was published in 1948. Robert's first grandchild was born in October, 1952. His wife Germaine died in 1989. And Robert Service died before her, in 1958. He was 84. Poe died when he was 40 in 1849. These two poets were both born in the 1800's, and they were both men. They are both well known today. Service was born into a more fortunate family, and Poe was born into a poor family. Poe was more educated, Service dropped out of school. Even though Service dropped out he made more money than Poe. Po was orphaned, and Service wasn't, also as an older man, and as a child Service traveled a lot. Poe didn't travel as much. That was a comparison between Robert W. Service and Edgar Allan Poe.
