We got Diamond as a foster dog in 1999. She squeezed under the fence and ran away on her first night at our house. Mom and I got hysterical and walked all over the neighborhood, calling for her (she didn't know her name, but she was very people-oriented so we thought she might come to us, anyway). We came home and were going to call the rescue agency (she was microchipped, but under their phone number). When we got there, we discovered that we hadn't pulled the front door tightly closed and she had pushed it open and come in. She had never been to the front door of the house before--we'd only had her a few hours. Obviously, we were meant to keep her!
