Puppies: Earnest, Phoebe, Ozzy, Millie

Profile: My husband and I have a habit of adopting dogs and cats, it's a little on the compulsive side. We've got two cats: Rupert (adopted from a no-kill shelter) and Darcy (adopted from a cold morning we saw her playing with Rupert through the sliding glass door). We also have four dogs: Earnest (lab-bloodhound mutt, adopted when he ended up in our backyard during an ice storm), Millie (adopted from a local shelter), Ozzy (adopted from a Jack Russell rescue), and Pheobe (rescued from one of my husband's customers). We've saved all of our dogs and treated all the major dog illnesses- heartworm, hookworm, giardia, bronchitis/pneumonia, the list goes on. They're expensive and time consuming, but our little family zoo is the best thing to come home to after a long day away :)

Earnest found us during an ice storm that knocked the power out for a full week. The day the power came back on, my husband pulled into the driveway and found him in our backyard. He was emaciated and had ice on his belly, so naturally he came inside. We already had a dog, so we fed him some of her food and gave him water. The next day, we harnessed him to put him outside and he ran away, cutting his chest in the process. Someone found him and returned him to us (thanks to the tags we got on day one). Earnie went to the vet to get stitched up and we discovered heartworms. Six months of intensive treatment for the worms and a horrible bladder infection passed, and he's a happy, if pathetic looking dog.

Phoebe is the latest addition to the Wongoose Family Zoo. We think she might be a lab/rat terrier mix, but have no clue. She was rescued from one of her Daddy's customers who couldn't take care of her. We think that it was a crack house, and in the middle of a month long heat wave, they had her chained up to the cement porch with only a bowl of water that she dumped over to lay in. She had been clearly underfed and it turns out had hookworms. Originally, we intended to only get her healthy and adopt her out as a foster dog, but she acclimated to our pack and we couldn't bear to see her leave.

Ozzy came to our family on Memorial Day weekend, 2010. Earlier in the month, we had lost our beloved Jack Russell, Daisy and decided to find a Jack Russel puppy. We got Ozzy through a Jack Russel rescue in Texas. He was the puppy of a JRT bred by her 80-something year old owner, who died before the puppies were born. Ozzy and his sister appear to have different fathers, as his sister is twice his size. We think he's about the cutest thing in the world, and is the perfect blend of Jack Russell with a twist of calm. He's got the energy, but can turn it off. He loves to lay on pillows and blankets and he's an expert laser chaser.

Millie is what we call a Miniature Pit Bull. We accidentally found her at a local shelter's adoption day at PetSmart when we walked in to buy dog food. It's a good thing we went home with her that day, because not 36 hours after she came home, she went to the emergency vet with a horrible case of giardia and pneumonia. It took a long time to get her healthy, but now that we have, she's the best dog we could ever ask for. She's definitely the leader of the pack, but not in a domineering Alpha dog way. She loves cuddle time with Mommy and Daddy (she's definitely Daddy's girl) and long, exhuasting walks through the neighborhood.
