Profile: I live in Glenwood Springs, Colorado -- that's on the Western slope, near Aspen -- with my two dogs, Chumley, who is 8 years old, a Jack Russell/Beagle boy, and Rascal, who is still a puppy in many ways, though he is 14 months old -- a Boxer/Beagle plus???. Also two cats, Pico, an extremely dignified 14 year old brown tabby, and Gracie, a 13 year old tortie who is determined to live up to the tortoiseshell cat's reputation for being temperamental. I have a store here where we sell the healthiest dog and cat food and supplements, supplies, training and recreational gear, etc. We also have doggie daycare, DIY grooming, training classes and host meetings and events for all the dog and cat groups in our valley. In 40 years of work life, I've been in the animal field - but in lots of different areas. I've raised, trained, shown, groomed and written about animals, and I've been in animal welfare, and now I'm in the process of transitioning my store to a cooperative. I like to keep learning, and I love to teach and help people solve problems with their pets. Along the way, I picked up a certificate in mediation and use it to help resolve issues between people over animals -- like in divorces, or neighbor problems with barking dogs. My personal mission is to bring the different perspectives to recognize their commonalities where prejudices sometimes get in the way -- like between the rescue world, animal rights folks (I consider myself one of them) and the purebred fanciers (I'm also Secretary of our local all-breed kennel club. I feel most of the divide is due to lack of opportunity to get to know each other -- but a biggish chunk is deliberately whipped up by the "commercial breeding industry" - aka puppy mills - who are the real bad guys, in my opinion. I'm very pleased with the fact that our club's annual dog show has turned the parking concession over to the local animal shelter, who get to use it as a fund raiser, and in the process, we all get better acquainted and able to work together on other stuff. We don't agree on everything, but we know we're not enemies! The Daily Puppy is a great website -- once figure out how to navigate it and learn how to post photos, I will introduce you all to my pups! And having a daycare means having a source of unlimited cuteness -- you can imagine!
