Guinness

We adopted Guinness in August of 2009. He had wandered into the yard of the father-in-law of a co-worker of my boyfriend (Brent). We weren't actively looking for a dog, but we were of the mind that if the right one came along, we would love to adopt it. Brent's coworker told him about this dog and asked we wanted to come look at it. We said yes but knew that if we were going to adopt him, we would have to wait for a week as they had to complete the two week hold while an active search was completed for his owner. My boyfriend and I went over one day after work and we knew, instantly, that he was the dog for us. A week later (they had found the dog a week before we went to look at him), we were told that no one claimed him. After work, on 8/24/09, we picked our 13 year old son up from home and went over to pick him up. The bond was immediate. When we got in the car, instead of just chilling on the backseat, or cowering in the back, he climbed up on my boyfriends lap in the passenger front seat and stuck his head out the window. Prior to adopting him, even seeing a picture, we had chosen the name Guinness...and it suited him perfectly. We guestimated that he was about 1 yr to 1.5 yrs old...the vet confirmed he was 1.5 yrs old. He has quickly become a favorite at his vets office...he is a favorite just about anywhere we take him. We have adapted our life to him for the most part, as he has become an integral part of our family. When we travel, he goes with us (he is a great traveler). Even the cat has come to love him...although, their first meeting didn't go so well. The night we brought Guinness home, we thought we would introduce them through our storm door. I held the cat and my boyfriend held Guinness outside the door. All Pokey (the cat) saw was this large thing coming out of the darkness...and peed on my leg. For the next couple of months, we hardly ever saw Pokey and he was refusing to eat. I was very concerned but then we started feeding them together (Pokey on the counter; Guinness next to him on the floor). It's been a little over a year, and now they are like brothers. Guinness is a very active dog and, since we don't have a large yard or a fence, we take him to the dog park as often as possible. Additionally, he gets several walks a day (4 - 5). Over the course of the past year, Guinness and Brent have become involved with a dog scootering group. Guinness loves scootering. For those unfamiliar with dog scootering, it is basically dog sledding with a two wheel scooter (a very big scooter). He has spent the last few months training for a competition coming up (the first weekend in December 2010) in North Eastern Maryland. We're not sure how well he will do, but all we care is that he has fun. Guinness is a very sweet and loving dog. He is very smart and protective...and just slightly crazy (LOL). We could not have asked for a better dog. He loves to give love and affection (and lots of licks)...almost as much as he likes to receive it. I can't count the number of times he will just come up to me and lick my hand...as if just say, "Hi mommy!" When he meets someone new, he will grumble alot...some people (kids especially) think he is growling...he's not, as he doesn't growl much at all. All he is doing is trying to tell the person to hurry up and pet him...he loves meeting new people and just doesn't know how to communicate that he wants them to pet him. Once people understand that (we've explained what he's doing), they will quickly pet him and receive licked faces as a thank you. He is definitely one of my furry children...I have three kids - my 15 year old son, my 15 year old meowing furry child and my 2.5 year old grumbling furry child...well, 4 kids if you count my boyfriend. Our family can't remember what life was like before Guinness.
