Pluto

Pluto is almost 12 years old, but still has the brain of a puppy. When we were expecting her, my children, who were only 4 and 6, promised Pluto in Disneyland they would name their puppy after him. So a girl named Pluto she became! She recently had emergency surgery for a lifethreatening problem in her throat, and now she barks, silently, for hours at the shadows in our yard.

Ellie: Adult Puppy

After we lost our beloved Pluto at 14 years,11 months, we thought we'd wait a year to get another dog. But Pluto's spirit directed us to check the Doggie Protective Services rescue website, and we saw this FACE. She was picked up as a starving stray in SoCal after having a litter of puppies. She was in a shelter for a month, DPS NoCal foster care (they named her Dottie) for 2 weeks, and then found us. She was very shy and quiet, but now she talks and sings and befriends every single human she meets (and most dogs). We named her Ellie after the little girl who became a woman in "UP"--Adventure is Out There! And it is! She has gone with us to Yosemite and Lake Tahoe. She LOVES to eat, and leap and twirl in snow, and is fascinated by mule deer. She loves to sleep on our grown son's bed--unless he's in there too--with his childhood stuffed dalmation. We can't imagine life without her. Her head is pure Border Collie, and the rest of her is a wild patchwork of different textures of black and white fur. Retriever? Springer Spaniel? Australian Shepherd? Who knows? We think she was about 3 when we got her on August 18, 2013, which we decided will be her "birthday."
