Oh, my word!......those eyes - they're hypnotic! Are they hazel, or is that just the light reflecting in them? Beau is absolutely stunning!!! How can you get anything done with this beauty around? I would never put him down; I'd be toting him around like a child with a teddy bear, playing with his ears (Spaniels have the best ears.) Great pictures.....more, please? I hope you have a long and wonderful life together.

haha, so cute. Look at Picture #3, the way he is laying down... so cute!

Oh my! I have Springer Spaniels and I've had Golden Cocker Spaniels, but I've never seen or heard of a Boykin Spaniel. Is it only a US breed? He's just adorable and I can feel my heart yearning. His colouring is like the brown bits on my Springers and I just want to hug him and stare at his eyes. Just gorgeous, and you're very lucky to have him.

OK - I wasn't planning on logging in - was just going to look at some pics... but, oh MY! When I saw Beau... had to comment.

Those fluffy ears - he's just BEAU-tiful. (I also had never heard of this breed - this site is so cool and you learn stuff, too!)

Lucky you!!

I am Beau's "aunt" and took these photos of him....he is a handsome guy, I agree. I have owned
3 Boykin Spaniels and although they were originally bred to be
bird hunters in Lowstate South Carolina, they also make wonderful companions...eager to please and very intelligent. My Boykin, Ben, always led my son's Boy Scout hikes in the Blue Ridge foothills with his own "doggie backpack". If you are interested in learning more about this breed, you can go to http://www.BoykinSpa

And those eyes!

Never heard of this breed of spanial. I had a Beau also, but he was a Blue Fawn Greyhound, who crossed the Rainbow Bridge, 15 days before his 15th birthday. I don't know what the lifespan is for your little Beau, but I hope and pray its a very very long time and that you enjoy him as much as I did mine! Your Beau is so adorable.
May 5, 2007 Toezie
My sister has a Boykin named Whiskey and he's just precious. I hope yours is a treasure because Beau sure is a cutie!
May 5, 2007 karousellteacher
Shadow, my puppy, looks just like Beau! I'm sure that Beau is just as loved and spoiled as my Shadow!
May 5, 2007 Chappysmom
I'm always thrilled to see another Boykin Spaniel. Mine is five years old now . . . it seems so long since he had a little puppy face like Beau!
May 5, 2007 vaishakbelle

My family has English Springer Spaniels, so I'm rather partial to Spaniels, but I'd never heard of this breed. He looks just as sweet as any of our Springers! (and looks like he holds still longer, can never get such good pictures of the Springers...) His expression is so pensive and almost wise... you sure do have a treasure. Thanks for sharing!!
Sounds like you live in the mountains, but do you know how a Boykin would do in a NY apartment? (The Springers I know are bred to chase pigeons, so that's kinda asking for trouble in NYC...)
May 6, 2007 untbunny
OMG-he must be part elastic. The photo of Beau on his belly with arms and legs folded is fantastic.
May 6, 2007 marilynl
My mom had a Field Spaniel from England that looked just like Beau. Same liver color and all. Her name was Emma and she passed a few years ago at a ripe old age. What a wonderful, smart dog she was! We miss her terribly. I showed English Springers for about 5 years and have never seen this dog! I certainly would have owned one if I had! Just Beautiful-worth 11 biscuits!!!
May 6, 2007 gem1945
He is just adorable. What a sweet face. We had two cocker spaniels, very loving and fun dogs. We miss them. We are enjoying our little Doxie now. We are at that stage in life when low maintenance is better for us. Enjoy Beau, he will bring you much joy. Great pics!!!!
May 6, 2007 muttsville
Beau has eyes like deep dark shimmering liquid pools! And picture #3 (where Beau is lying flat as a limp mop) is WONDERFUL! Many Thanks for Sharing.

May 6, 2007 spaghetti130
What a darling. I love the classic picture of him lying down so funny! he looks like a chicken! best wishes!
May 6, 2007 doxigrafix
I first heard of Boykin Spaniels in a very good Anne Rivers Siddons novel, Sweetwater Creek, and I've been dying to see one! The book describes them as wonderful doggies. He's a little darling! That dear somber face... he has that wonderful combination of looking playful and serious and totally wise at the same time.
May 7, 2007 NYCWMN
Cute as a button. But I have to agree with the choke collar comment. Please try a Halti or gentle leader if it's control you are trying to attain.

Good luck with the cutie!

I'm from the great state of SOUTH CAROLINA and I am glad to see our state dog making us proud. He is precious - and those eyes!
May 7, 2007 daria
Gorgeous puppy!

PLEASE, Lose the choke chain! I know I wouldn't want to learn by being choked. It's obvious you love your dog, there are other ways to teach that are more fun for both of you.
May 7, 2007 liz
I love the lying down pic where he seems to be melting into the grass. All limp and smooshy. Agree w/choke collar comments. As said before, please try Halti or Gentle Leader. Your puppy will appreciate it!

i've been a boykin owner and breeder over the last 15 years. best breed ever. (ok, i'm biased) boykins are all of the good things mentioned above and then some. one should also be very aware that they are also another very good thing and that is that they are truly a working breed. if you walk 5 miles in the field and they run free, they will cover 20 miles while you go 5, and they will be disappointed when you quit. if they don't run that energy off outside, they can disassemble your house without breaking a sweat. don't get one unless you can commit to BIG exercise every day.

I own a Boykin Spaniel named Calhoun. It's a wonderful breed. Before getting a Boykin, I did a great deal of research. Here are some things for you to consider if you would like to own one. 1. Because the dog is so cute and popular, some breeders have become irresponsible in their breeding (read: puppy mill). This irresponsible breeding can cause problems like bad skin, discolored hair, eye problems, hip problems, erratic personalities, etc. It is very important that you interview your breeder about their breeding standards. If they seem irritated over it, move on. 2. Your breeder should also be interviewing you. I had to do an extensive interview to assure them I could provide a good home for the dog. If your breeder give you only a price and a date for the next litter, move on. 3. The Boykin Spaniel Society is the old school group that allowed many breeders to ignore proper breeding standards. The alternative to them is the Boykin Spaniel Club ( and they are the official parent club of the breed for the AKC. 4. My Boykin is a collaboration between two kennels that I highly recommend. Carolina Kennels ( and Sunseeker Kennel ( They are highly responsible breeders who are passionate about protecting the breed and promoting responsible breeding standards. They only breed bitches once a year and go to great lengths to introduce new blood lines into their breeding programs. Because of all of this, expect to pay a premium (perhaps twice what you would pay at the puppy mills). But, you can also expect an amazing puppy!!! Tell them that Calhoun's owner sent you!

Beau, you are a spectacular beauty! Just one of the cutest puppies I have ever seen! What a treat!

We used to raise these Boykin Spaniels when I was a kid. You just don't see very many of them, but they have a heart of gold and will love and protect their family with all their might. Many happy years to you Beau!
