Home Remedy for a Scratching Dog

By Erin Maurer

Overview

Dry skin and allergies are the most common causes of obsessive scratching in household pets. Dogs suffering from these conditions may scratch affected areas until they are raw and sore. There are many home remedies that can ease a dog’s suffering and put an end to obsessive scratching.

Bathing

A gentle bath effectively calms dry, irritated skin. Bathing may be a soothing process for dogs and help calm nerves. Additionally, there are several products that you can add to bath water to further ease irritation. Oatmeal, when combined with water, becomes a soothing rub. Rub the oatmeal mixture on the dog’s skin and leave on for ten minutes. Rinse with warm water and pat dry. Another option is to give your dog a bath of Epsom salts. Epsom salts have healing properties, and mixing them with cool water effectively soothes irritated skin. Do not allow your dog to drink the bath water. Epsom salts can be dangerous if ingested.

Spot Treatment

Baths calm the entire coat and skin; however, most dogs with an itching problem scratch a specific area until it is sore and painful. Many common household products make effective treatments for irritated, sore spots. Mix apple cider vinegar or baking soda with cool water and apply to irritated spots. These products bring down inflammation and soothe sore areas. Another product with healing properties is Calendula extract. Available at most health food stores, this liquid can be applied directly to sore areas.

Moisturizing

For dogs that suffer from dry, itchy skin it is very important to keep the skin and coat moisturized. Complete oils are naturally moisturizing. Adding sunflower, safflower, corn or peanut oil to dog food helps prevent dry skin. Giving a dog vitamin E or fish oil capsules also prevents dry skin. You can also break open capsules of vitamin E and fish oil. Combing the oil through the coat helps relieve dryness.

Antiseptics

Another effective way to treat dry, itchy skin is to use antiseptic products. Tea tree oil, known as an effective antiseptic, cleans allergens off skin. Brush tea tree oil on skin daily to soothe irritation.

One well-respected treatment, reports the Herbal Home Remedies website, for obsessive scratching of dry, irritated skin is to mix aspirin tablets in rubbing alcohol. Combine this mixture with a mixture of tea and water. Apply the solution to sore area with a cotton ball. This method cleans wounds and relieves inflammation and itchy skin.
