All in the Family

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

Beetlejuice was a true lesson in love and determination. At 7 weeks, he was sold by a breeder from So.CA to a woman in No.California. As required the new owner brought the pup to her vet, who heard the unmistakeable sound of MVD upon listening to his heart. The vet felt the puppy didn't have long and quality of life would be poor and wanted to put him down. Morified, the new owner immediately phoned the breeder & they agreed to exchange the puppy for the last one left in the litter. I knew very little about this breeder. In fact I knew her not as breeder, but as local business owner of an upscale 2nd hand store. She would bring the entire entourage of cavs with her to the store. I quickly warmed up to the breed. I had a wonderful adult Boxer at the time and certainly wasn't looking to add another companion to my family unit, but when this tragic incident came about, and upon seeing this 8wk old puppy, adorable, full of life and affection, I took emotional stock and offered to take him and give him a loving home for as long as he lived. The breeder was beside herself realzing she just lost $1300.00 that she'd never recoup and now saddled with the fees of euthanasia. So relieved to wash her hands of the entire affair when placing him in my arms. I took this little ball of fluff to my own vet. He confirmed the diagnosis, and gave him a 6 mos -18 mos prognosis. Well 6 months turned into 6 wonderful blessed years. Beetlejuice was never sick a day in his life other than the occasional building up of fluids around his heart which I treated with a diuretic. I swear with each passing year he had more energy than the year before. Then one day, I heard a "cough" ... one that I remembered from years ago that I had heard on his father (who then was 11yrs old at the time with MVD.) I knew with a huge pitt in my stomach exactly what that sounds was & rushed him to my vet. Kudos to my vet who went the extra mile, calling professors at universitys, known vet cardiologists, trying to see if there was anything we could do for him. Alas, it was inevitable, & within 2 weeks of that first cough Beetlejuice seized in my arms, died swiftly and mercifully. I remember the feeling of his body laying so limp yet warm and relaxed as I cried and rocked him. We had an appointment scheduled only 5 minutes away at the vet's to put him down, but I guess he decided he wanted to be with me at home. I tell this story not to relive the pain, but relive the joy he brought to my life, and the power of will as he defied the odds. Mostly I share this story because of the outrage I have for these backyard breeders, who are only looking for profit, and in total disregard for these wonderful companions and the future of maintaining breed standards, both in health & temperament. I learned Beetlejuice's mother had only been 6 months old (her first heat) when she got pregnant, and it because she wasn't separated from the other cavaliers who happened to be closely related. Needless to say the breeder has been blacklisted with the AKC & CKCS clubs and anything I can continue to do to educate people about responsible pet ownership and do your homework first. I don't regret a day of his life and he truly showed me that sometimes a leap of faith is worth the love and all the wonderful happy moments we shared. He was a true scrapper. Please watch out for these wonderful Cavs who are suffering terribly from this heart disease by being responsible pet owners & spaying and neutering your pets. Or if you do decide to show or breed, thoroughly check out who you are buying from, and trust your instincts. This is such a well dispositioned breed, always happy go lucky companions, it's simply criminal to see their life spans shortening and/or the quality of their lives ruined by a these greedy, and abuse backyard profiteers. I wish I had more pictures, he truly was a beautiful Cavalier inside and out.
