All in the Family

Black and Tan Coonhound

Ivy was a Black and Tan rescue. She was found jammed into a crate with the puppies she had just given birth to. Those living quarters were so crowded some of the pups died of suffocation. She and her puppies were moved to Pennsylvania to be fostered. We were going to adopt one of the puppies, but decided not to. We were looking for a puppy and did not look twice at Ivy, who was very haggard looking, and had a large recent but healing scar on her back. After the puppies all were adopted her foster mom had to travel for an extended period, and we volunteered to keep her for a little bit. She had no manners, and has a tendency to bolt and set off on a wild coon chase. We did not think we could keep her for very long, she just didn't fit in. That thought lasted about a day, and she is still with us, and one of the nicest dogs to ever cross our threshold.

Ivy is indeed a gorgeous girl! Your early trials with her sound so familiar. Our Lucy started the same way at our house. We were convinced we couldn't keep her, and I tried every thing to find her a good home. The problem was none were suitable in my mind, so more time passed. Finally a friend said " Lucy already has a good home, just you haven't realized it yet" I was so protective of her because of how mistreated coonhounds are, which I did not realize until meeting her. Bless you for keeping Ivy, they are a handful.

What a beautiful girl! What a sad start in life that Ivy had. I get so angry when I read about puppy mill dogs and what they have to endure. I fight the mills whenever I can. I can understand her behavior initially. She was doing what she was bred to do. She's a scent hound. What a nose and ears they have. If they get antsy or start to bark, you can be sure there is a reason. Many happy healthy years for Ivy and her loving family. Treats and adventures for her. Thanks to her family for taking her into your hearts and home. HI from black & tan Chad from Pennsylvania.
