All in the Family
Toby Tippy

Jingles was adopted from the Humane Society in October 2000. He was my Christmas gift after I had a spinal fusion. I spent most of my time recovering in a recliner with Jingles sitting next to me. As I got back on my feet, Jingles let me know that he wouldn't use a leash by gnawing and pulling it to bits. From then on, when we went for a walk he stayed at my heels which worked well for me since having a dog tug on a leash would have been painful. When I went away to college, Jingles stayed home with my grandma who had MS. Jingles kept her going for walks which were crucial to keeping her on her feet. During the holidays, he would come to visit me at college, but he didn't like the snow very much (probably since it was a foot over his head). After college, I spent a year working away from home and my dad sent me pictures. When I returned to my hometown, Jingles was still his old self, energetic and cute as ever. As he got older, he grew a gray beard and I called him "my little old man". He still loved all of his favorite games, running through the whole house as fast as he could, and sitting up on his toosh like a human to watch what was going on. Most of all, he loved watching TV. Jingles was loved by every member of the family, and while he was alive he saw some pass away and some new additions. When I bought my first house, we did a lot of renovations in the course of the week. When they were all done, I spent hours scrubbing and cleaning so that it would be "puppy-friendly". On moving day, while furniture was being loaded on the truck and moved to the new house, Jingles wasn't feeling well--he seemed stressed about the move. He kept going out to the yard and laying down. After the last trip of the night, I went back to pick up Jingles and the last load. Jingles had curled up under my desk and passed away. Since I work from home, he used to lay curled up under my feet while I was working. My aunt said that he chose that spot because he felt safest and happiest there. Jingles saw me through a lot of change in my life, and I feel like he chose the time to go because he knew that he had had a wonderful life, and that the family would be safe without him.
