I rescued Lightning when he was 2 years old. He was the best dog and gave us many years of joy. He was our protector, companion, teacher (to our other dogs). We had to put him down when he was 14 years old. We miss him but he has no more pain (he had arthritis very badly and his back legs stopped working).

God bless you for rescuing him and giving him a loving home. We had a very similar situation except our white GSD was stricken with cancer at age 7 and we lost him then.
