Luka came all the way from Hong Kong to find happiness in the US. He has had a hard life and deserves to be appreciated -- Luka comes from an affiliated rescue group in China. Luka's owner belonged to an ethnic group called the Tankas or Boat people. Tankas live on junks(fishing boats) along the coastal area of southern China. In Luka's case, he was the guard dog on a fishing boat that was berthed at a fishing port. One sad day on August 19 2009, Luka's owner decided to put down Luka because, according to the owner, Luka was frightening some people. The owner walked all the way from the port to the nearby government pound - a 30 minute walk, uphill all the way. Luka was noted lagging behind the man, walking very slowly. In retrospect, it was a sad scene as it was supposedly the last walk for Luka. The owner had Luka's mouth tightly bound with a plastic cable tie - Luka was obviously stressed. Fortunately for Luka, a kind volunteer intercepted the death row walk and intervened on Luka's behalf. Luka spent the first few days at the SPCA to get neutered / hip x-ray / routine checkup / and observation. During his stay there, one of the staff walked Luka everyday at the nearby dog park which is next to the harbour. Apparently, Luka would stare at the harbor and was oblivious to everything around him. Understandably, Luka has been reluctant to trust those he does not know. After spending much time aclimating Luka to his new environment in the United States, we have found him to be a loving, "leaner". Luka knows basic commands and walks well on a lead. He yearns for love and affection. Luka needs an experienced shepherd owners only who understands their sensitive nature - no children.
