First of all, thank you for giving Max a new lease on life ;o) Please do not let Max off lead unless he is in a secured fenced area. The following is a true account from an experienced Afghan Hound owner. She rescued Shamir 1 year ago. Erica & Shamir lived in Switzerland. It is not my fold.. Not my Fold Its a very bad nightmare.Every thing went wrong as much as could be. But It is not my food. I was Sunday with Shamirli at the Sighthound racing place. It is a vey safe place. I middle of a big field .The whole place is fenced .With the place were the peoples looks for the Sight hounds run.. Really NOt the smallest think that a dog could come out and run way... OI was at the start to try o let him run... I let The " rabbit" cames very slowly at the string I let Shamirli go he was runnin. Zhan a big noise from an Airiplane were was in the air Shamirli runs out of he Track, but not to much in Hurry. I was nOt afraid because I know all is fenced and the gates are closed... I ran behind Shamir ,,,, But then I saw I woman with 2 Afghans was Standing by the small gate and talking to an other woman, only for peoples and d her dog do through.. She hold that gate OPEN Shut be closed!!!!!!! I was screaming Close That door Close that Door,,, but se did not reacting... Shamir run through. Stopped and We all think would come back... Bad then A second Airplane comes, from the Army, wit loud big bang.. Shamir was running away 2 bikers had seen him 5 minutes after.. then nobody s^has seem him till today We were searching for him with Cars by food, with bicycles . We hanged photo flyers more than 200 in a circle from about 20 Miles we asked everybody were we see. Give my cell number Tell to al lNewespaper On radio today maybe I get a meeting/ talk there with our big Television for this region. The hunters now. the police now. I was spending the first night Sunday to Monday in the very cold / wet night shouting and waiting the whole night for Shamir I go every day thee Its on way almost 2 hours by car and I have to cross the lake of Zurich with the Ferry. I stay there till the night then go home and go at the morning again there to wait for Shamir. Everybody give a change that he will find the way back to the racing places. Then I will be there. In the night I put one of his pillows' and put food there.fir him. But I think foxes will eat the food. We had some animals communicator for help.. Useless. I asked for Bloodhounds.. useless the only do for peoples and told me its too have for the dogs to go for a Afghan. I am total scared I cant eat or drink. I throw up everything... It IS NOT MY FOOD NON SAFER PLACE AS THERE:: Bt I had that bad that "@**** woman opened that door ho is NOT allows during the race time.... PLEASE; PLEASE KEEP FINGER CROSSED FOR SHAMIR that somebody seems him mad can get me a point were he is, or beter can catch him. Unfortunately there is a lot, very lot wooden area with a lot "come not through for peoples. Please keep finger crossed and PRAY. PRAY for Shamirli and Me . I will kiss him again and hold him tight. I we will not find him , I dot know how to life then. This is very rare, most never make it back to their owners.

I appreciate all concern for Max's well-being, but want to reassure everyone: 90% of our farm is fenced, and one area is completely fenced. Our trails are groomed, and going off trail means dense brush, so there is little inclination in the dogs to go off trail. We see deer, coyote, game birds regularly on our trails and although our dogs will all give a jump and short chase, they all come when called and are trained to "leave it" and "come" and to stay on the trails. They are trained to reliability, as long as it takes, in our fenced area before they are ever released on our trails. I know Max is not yet ready for this, but I will also know when he is... and he will be as safe as our greyhound and bluetick/beagle cross are, and as our 2 irish wolfhounds and other afghan were... all dogs we were told could never be trusted to not chase deer etc because they were scent or sight hounds. It is true that some dogs might not be able to be trained, but blanket statements condemn too many dogs to a life on a leash. All of our dogs have lived wonderful healthy happy lives with a long free run with me every day, once they were properly trained. I agree that many people haven't the ability to recognize or understand dog body language, or the ability to train their dogs... and some dogs may not be completely reliable, ever... but to this point all of my dogs have been wonderful on recall, and I am confident Max will reach that point as well.
