Meet Harper. He is our first "child" and a cousin of Ryder, former Daily Puppy. Harper is a great balance of playful and laid back. His paintbrush tail is always wagging high! He is extremely friendly towards people and he loves other dogs. He enjoys going for walks, getting fed treats and sleeping by the back door. Harper is very smart and knows his basic commands. We love it when he gives us a high five! We just love our little devil.

You are one big handsome furry ball of love. I would love to hold you and squueze you. I have a Burmese Mountain dog mix. He is 21 years old and has the same markings as you do. His name is Obie and he weighs 98 pounds. I hope God gives you the long life he is giving Obie.

Please be aware that as wonderful as this breed is, BMD’s do have special environmental needs and health issues. You should be familiar with these issues before you make your final decision to add a Berner to your family. Please go to the Berner Homepage at: http://www.berner.org/ They have included many resources which we hope will help answer your questions and familiarize you with various aspects of this incredible breed.
* Be very careful of puppy millers and importers* (see www.bmdcni.org website for full warning--although be careful about their breeder referral list. They've had some "problems" in that club with some breeders not living up to standard.) If you get replies from people telling you they have puppies available now--be concerned! There are some very bad things going on out there with Berner pups. For example, there's an Amish guy over in Iowa raising sickly puppies in a chicken coop and he is advertising in the newspapers. These dogs WILL have health problems, no doubt about it.
Puppy millers and importers are very skilled at making their web sites look pretty and say the "right things". To tell who are puppymills and who aren't, there are a few things to look for. Good breeders will have links to breed clubs like the BMDCA or local clubs like the BMDCSEW. Look for links to educate the public about puppymillers and health related links. Look for certifications like OFA, GDC, CERF and such. If they have an application on the web site look out! If they accept PayPal or credit cards--BAD sign. Dogs coming from former eastern block countries, including Russia, Hungary and Romania, to name a few, are not the same dogs as what you have in mind as a Berner. They have sharp (sometimes even mean) temperaments and no health checks for multiple generations. Avoid dogs from these places.

As per the Breed Standard of the AKC:
Color and Markings
The Bernese Mountain Dog is tri-colored. The ground color is jet black. The markings are rich rust and clear white. Symmetry of markings is desired. Rust appears over each eye, on the cheeks reaching to at least the corner of the mouth, on each side of the chest, on all four legs, and under the tail. There is a white blaze and muzzle band. A white marking on the chest typically forms an inverted cross. The tip of the tail is white. White on the feet is desired but must not extend higher than the pasterns. Markings other than described are to be faulted in direct relationship to the extent of the deviation. White legs or a white collar are serious faults. Any ground color other than black is a disqualification.
Well he sure fits the description - to a tee! He's a beautiful specimen of the breed!
