We absolutely love our darling Loki, but please make sure that you do your research about Shibas. They are a dominant breed and hence, not for everyone. They are funny puppies with a mind of their own; they do not make good lap dogs. Best wishes to you, whatever puppy you decide on =)

Oh my, what a cuddle bug! And that fur is just gorgeous. I've loved the Shiba Inu breed for years, though I know it's not a good breed for my situation. Congratulations on your new Shiba Inu puppy! The breed is becoming very popular. My "pup" (Jesse) was 14 years old when he passed on in November, 2006. He is missed every day, but the memories are as real as if it was yesterday. He was a constant companion - loved to travel in the car and made himself at home when visiting friends. The personality of a Shiba Inu is very unusual - not the type of dog to "jump" up on visitors and they are exceptionally clean. They are very independent and loving at the same time. They are very smart. They can be agressive with other animals, but Jesse at the age of 13 welcomed our 2 adopted cats in a very short time. They miss him, too. Who could not love a Shiba Inu???

Just how much is fluff and how much is dog! He looks adorable and a beautiful colour too.

I am trying to do my research; Shiba-inu is one of the breeds we're considering. Pembroke Welsh Corgi is another .. I really love Golden Retrievers and Springer Spaniels but they are such outdoor doggies...I'm not so sure one would be happy in the city.

Do you know if Shibas are okay with babies/ little kids? (None now, but later ...) I hear mixed things.

Shibas are not "automatically" good with babies & kids. They must be properly socialized when a puppy to be good with babies & kids. And if properly socialized, then they are great with them.

I have 2 shibas, both rescued thru Midwest Shiba Inu Rescue. There are several rescue groups across the country and they have networks of transport options so if you aren't in the area you can still adopt one of their dogs.

Shiba's are very affection and require LOTS OF EXERCISE to be content.

Please support the rescue effort and get your Shiba from a rescue group and NOT FROM A BREEDER.

I'm a firm believer in rescuing dogs from shelters. Every dog I've ever owned has been a rescue. Loki is a beauty, maybe her sisters and brothers can be rescues?

What a sweetie! We have a rescue dog which is part Shiba Inu, part ? She is WONDERFUL with kids. However, she does not like to share us with other dogs. She needs to be the "only" family dog. (Which is tough because--until last month, when she passed--we also had a Border Collie, and we now also have a Jack Russell Terrier mix. Our Shiba gets along better with the JRT than she did with our Border Collie. I think it's because the JRT is male, whereas the Border Collie was female like her.)

Actually, he moves around so much that it is difficult to get a good picture of him when he's not sleeping!

That's why a lot of pictures are of him sleeping! Hehe =)

I too, adopted a Shiba from Midwest Shiba Rescue...from a PUPPY MILL! They think our dog had two litters every year for at least six years. Shiba's have an average of two pups per litter. Not a great return for the greedy breeder! It nearly ruined the spirit and body of our beloved girl. It's taken years for her to reach any level of normality, still she will always mistrust strangers and have many physical problems. We were prepared for her health problems but her fears have been the hardest to work through.

The cute puppy you see at the mall pet store, newspaper add or on-line may have come from one of the countless puppy mills that are only concerned with money. Don't take home a puppy just because it's the cutest thing you ever saw. Shiba Inus in general, aren't snuggly. They are smart, independant, fast, preditory hunting dogs that have been part of Japanese culture for centuries. And, really, really cute.

My point is...research dog breeds carefully. Research any breeders carefully. Visit the kennels, meet the parents. Consider one of the many rescue organizations or shelters working hard to find homes for unwanted animals. They are worth the effort and deserve another chance.

Haha, our dog has a hard time with fetch too. Whenever I throw a ball or something for him to fetch he just keeps staring at me as though I never had the toy and I'm so much more important than whatever I threw away.

This isn't a breed I am familar with, but oh, my goodness, what a perfect little "cuddle bug". I am going to have to do some research and find out about these dogs. Very beautiful and can imagine he will grow into an even more handsome adult! Good wishes and may your marriage always be blessed.

Loki is a beautitul baby. I have 2 Schipperkes, and their tempermant sounds similar. They are very protective of their humans, and suspicious of other humans and dogs if not socialized properly. The one thing different, is that they LOVE to cuddle. This may be because we have cuddled them since they were itty bitty pups. But, I love the Shiba Inus, and have considered possibly getting one in the future. Our schips have japanese names b/c mommy loves all things japanese! :)

Shippo Sezu Hizo-ko is our male. His name means roughly precious little treasure without a tail. The translation is a little lost, but, it was as close as we could get. Here is a picture I took that is going to be included in a coffee table photo book. (I entered it in some online thing, and they are putting it in the book.)

Anyway, my husband and I got our first dog about 6 months after we got married and they have truly been like children. They bless your life and enhance it with so much love. I know Loki will bring you a lot of special memories! He really is a beauty!

Loki is just adorable and sounds just like the typical Shiba - smart, stubborn and independent! Who could not love one of these beautiful puppies!?! The problem is that not everyone is cut out to be a good Shiba owner.

Our first Shiba died two years ago, at 13 years of age after a brave battle with cancer. In our neighborhood he was called The Pope in recognition of his strong and stoic but gentle personality. He was just the most wonderful dog and was loved by everyone, even our friends who never met a dog they liked. But we worked hard at training and socializing him. He would've been a terror otherwise!

Our second Shiba is only a year old. He's a little pistol and while he doesn't yet have a neighborhood nickname, we think it's likely to be "Trouble" . We think Shiba owners need to invest significant time in socializing and training their dog. These dogs are very smart and do not have the easy-going, happy to please, pet-me-and-I'll-love you personality of a Golden or a Lab. They are not lap dogs and are almost cat-like in their independence. But they can reward you a million times over with their quirky antics and courageous hearts if you give them the right encouragement and skills.

So precious and does remind me of a wonderful teddy bear!!!

Ten years ago I lived in Japan and saw this breed all over the place. Now when I see them I think they are so amazing. They are adorable little guys with alot of personality.

We have a Shiba (Tika), inherited from our daughter mainly because our (soon-to-be-ex) son-in-law could not 'deal' with her independence which is exactly what we love about her (and tells you something about him). Yes, Shibas do keep you on your toes and they are not for everybody. She tends to be aggressive with dogs bigger than her although she and our lab got along great before he passed away, but does fine with dogs her own size. Guess she feels she doesn't have to try to intimidate them. :-) She's great with the grandkids but we do keep a close eye as you should with any dog.

He definitely looks like a bear/fox. Such a cute little ball of fur. He has the most adoreable looking face. Theres a real intelligence in his eyes, too!I wish I could snuggle with that wonderful little puppy! Big hugs and lots of kisses from me. He's definitely gets 11 biscuits!!!
