Canine Companions for Independence is a non-profit organization that enhances the lives of people with disabilities by providing highly-trained assistance dogs and ongoing support to ensure quality partnerships. Canine Companions assistance dogs are trained in up to 50 commands designed to make everyday life easier for adults and children with physical and developmental disabilities. They open and close doors, retrieve dropped objects, and turn on and off lights. Outside of physical tasks, Canine Companions assistance dogs provide immeasurable emotional support to their human partners. Established in 1975, Canine Companions now has five regional training centers across the country. Canine Companions is recognized worldwide for the excellence of its dogs, and the quality and longevity of the matches it makes between dogs and people. i had a friend who had a companion dog for about 10 years. Missy was the most beautiful, loyal, and devoted dog one could ever meet. She was a great friend and is missed every day. She did every one proud...God bless these loyal companions

Daily Puppy? Are you TRYING to kill us? I mean these angels,w/ their little outfits on, and what they do, and how selfless they are- I mean COME ON!!!! As LongIslander said, "cuteness overload"! I hope I am wrong in wondering this, but my heart is for the pups in this situation, and I hope they are treated w/ love and tenderness (when they get to their permanent homes), and get to play and be dogs like every other dog. Not just working all the time. Anyway, just a little concern I have whenever I see helping pups. But, the owners of these little pawed angels do seem to totally adore their babies whenever I have witnessed those who own them. If anyone has a happy story, I'd love to hear it!!! GOD BLESS these babies; GOD definitely sent them down here and their wings must be hidden!!! Uh, I just love em so much!!!!

Thanks DP for featuring such a worthy cause! I worked with a man who raised the pups-in-training. He and his wife trained countless dogs for Canine Assist programs and they remembered every single dog who lived with them for his or her first year. I marveled at their dedication and ability to let them go. There's a special place in heaven for people who are so selfless in preparing these dogs to serve.

These cute little pups are angels. Just beautiful and with great personalities. I truly hope they find love and joy in their permanent homes.
Pupfanatic, I'm a TV producer who has done stories on service dogs, and I can attest that they do get play time and cuddle time, like any other family dog. They also have the opportunity to do a job, which is part of the instincts of these breeds. They like to have a purpose to keep their minds active. They also get to be with their people 24/7 and "go with" anywhere, which is the dream of ANY dog! These little ones will have very fulfilling lives!
I noticed a few people were concerned about the treatment of these puppies, especially once they go to their forever home. I want to emphasize I do not work for CCI, nor am I a puppy raiser. However, I have several friends who are puppy raisers for CCI. They chose CCI specifically because the organization is so careful about making proper dog/person matches. Individuals must either be able to provided proper care (including exercise/play) for the dog or have another individual, such as a parent, that can. Also, before an individual takes the dog home, they spend 2 weeks at one of the CCI facilities doing team training with the dog. These dogs have fantastic lives, they go everywhere with their person and form a bond that can't be described. I love my family dogs, but there is no way I could love them the way these puppy raisers or their companion people do. I have been to "graduation" where the puppy raiser has the opportunity to hand the leash over to the puppy's new companion, and it is one of the most wonderful and emotional events I've ever been to. As a final note, I have joked to my friends in the past, that when I die, I want to come back as a CCI puppy : )

Beautiful babies and such a wonderful job and companionship they will provide someday when they are grown. The caregivers who raise them also need to be commended...it has to be terribly hard to let them go one day. They are true heroes in my book!

Every one of us knows how wonderful it is to have a dog. I think it's so wonderful to have these darling babies trained not only to help people with phsyical acts but to do the thing that dogs do best...love unconditionally.
I am now a retired Special education substitute teacher. I have worked with individuals with multiple challenges for 30 years. I know first hand the blessings of these wonderful dogs! The service these puppies provide to humans is amazing. I have a service dog that lives down the street from us and he is truly a blessing in my neighbor's life. And yes, he gets to enjoy being a puppy as well. Noodles, my corgi and he get to have play dates.

OH MY GOSH! I had a Lab puppy just like this one, his name was Moon Shadow, and I have a picture of him among Bluebonnets too. I use to live in the Hill Country and he enjoyed our state flower. He became a Police Dog, and died on duty at the young age of 8 years old. He lived a long and happy life and was an excellent drug detecting officer. This is a great looking BUNCH and wish them many years of service and love.
Their vests look like superhero capes! Of course, that is totally appropriate. Once they are trained, they will each be a superhero for somebody. All four are so cute and seem sweet-natured.
I would like to bring attention to the public the issue of psychriatric assistance animals. It is little known that the pets of the mentally disabled are also assistance animals. Most landlords don't recognize them as assistance animals. People that have mental disorders such as depression, PTSD, bipolar or borderline personality disorder have less problems when they have their pets with them. These are considered the same as service animals. They are not recognized enough. People think that service or assistance animals are only for the physically disabled. This is not true. I feel very strongly about this being an advocate for the rights of the mentally disabled as well as someone with some of these mental disorders myself. Please let the public know about the use of psychiatric assistance animals.

I am a puppy raiser for CCI. I am currently on my 6th pup. I can vouch for the fact they gets LOTS of play time, lots of love and more attention than you can shake a stick at (oooo....sticks! I love chasing sticks!!!). It is heartbreaking to let them go but as the mother of a disabled son who has had 2 service dogs in the last 20 years, I know what good they do. I tell everyone each puppy takes a piece of my heart when they go but each leaves me a piece of their heart in return. So in the end I will have more dog heart than human which I think is a MUCH better trade. Everyone tells me what a great thing I am doing. I tell them I am humbled that I am allowed the privilege of being a small part of something so amazing. Besides....I get one of these adorable puppies every year. How lucky am I??

These are the most adorable Lab pups. As a Lab owner, I know the wonderful traits this breed has and as a Physician, I know the good they do for people with disabilities. I have the highest admiration for the people who train these animals and have to give them up after a year. Thanks for featuring both the dogs and their wonderful service. (I didn't get the pic of the five of them in my mail). These animals are true God-sent angels.

Imagine if you will....you are a child with a disability. You aren't like other children. You are overwhelmed by many things and situations that non-disabled people take for granted. Like having someone talk to you, or look you in the eye. Or be your friend. And then one day, a dog comes into your life. He is a special dog. He loves you no matter what. Every second of every day. He will stand by you and help you get through your day. Strangers smile at you. Kids at school want to sit by you and your "cool dog". Having your dog by your side gives you the confidence to talk to people and make new friends. These things were impossible to do before your special friend came into your life. Your friend is a CCI dog.
I am a puppy raiser for Canine Companions for Independence and I can vouch for these pups. They are all loved and raised by some of the most fantastic, caring, loving people I have ever met. These pups are trained to be working dogs and they know when they put the cape on that they have a job to do (kinda like superman). After work,they get to play and run just like other dogs. Canine Companions for Independence is truly one of the most wonderful, selfless programs I have ever seen. I personally treasure every second I have with my sweet pup and look forward to raising many more for CCI.

Pupfanatic: Please do not worry! These pups are absolutely lovedfrom the minute they are conceived until they cross the Rainbow Bridge. We love being puppy raisers and shed a few tears at turn in but only tears of joy when they graduate and go to their forever homes where they both work hard and play hard everyday!

One big change in your life will be that everyone smiles when they see you coming with that pup walking by your side! YOUR life is changed forever. Be warned that being a pr is addictive. As soon as you turn a pup back in you want another one...and on and on! SMILE!! PR of 6 pups so far
Life is definitely improved with Karilee in my life she certainly makes me quite less invisible out in the world and instead of people focusing on my disability they always have such great questions about what she does for me. I am so thankful to the amazing puppy raiser that she had and the trainers at CCI who really do everything they can to make sure that not only are the dogs that we have extremely helpful to us but that we know what we are doing when we leave CCI. As for playtime Karilee has quite a basket full of toys that she plays with whenever she wants at home and I love taking her for walks in the neighborhood and throwing the ball in the backyard. I highly recommend CCI to anybody with a disability who is looking for a great companion and if there is anybody out there that wants to be a puppy raiser it would be a great thing for you to do.

What a great organization and special little puppies that are designated to make someone else's life easier. I applaud the commitment of the trainers and all others who are involved in making this one of the greatest life tools!!!
